High above Los Angeles, nestled on the southern slope of Mount Lee, the Hollywood Sign stands as one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. Spanning 350 feet in length and standing 45 feet tall, the massive white letters are not just a marker on the hillside—they represent the global allure of the entertainment industry and the promise of ambition fulfilled.
A Humble Beginning as a Real Estate Ad
The Hollywood Sign began its life in 1923, not as a tribute to the film industry, but as a promotional billboard for a new housing development called “Hollywoodland.” Erected by Los Angeles Times publisher Harry Chandler, the sign was originally intended to stand for just 18 months. The 13-letter sign was outlined with thousands of light bulbs and glowed nightly over the Los Angeles Basin.
From Neglect to a Cultural Landmark
As the film industry flourished and the name Hollywood became synonymous with cinema, the sign gained unexpected cultural significance. By the late 1940s, the structure had deteriorated significantly. In 1949, the decision was made to remove the “LAND” portion and restore the remaining letters to reflect the broader identity of the Hollywood district.
However, the sign again fell into disrepair in the 1970s. Several letters were damaged or missing altogether, symbolizing not only the physical decay of the sign but also a changing era in Hollywood itself.
Restoration Through Star Power
In 1978, a major restoration effort was launched thanks to public interest and celebrity support. Prominent figures such as Hugh Hefner, Alice Cooper, and Gene Autry helped fund the rebuilding of the sign, with each new letter sponsored at a cost of $27,700. The current version, built with steel and designed to withstand the elements, was completed later that year and remains standing today.
Visiting the Sign
Though public access to the sign itself is restricted, several hiking trails and parks offer excellent vantage points. Griffith Park, the Mt. Hollywood Trail, and Lake Hollywood Park are among the best places to view and photograph the sign without violating any access rules.

The Hollywood Sign has appeared in countless films, television shows, commercials, and video games. Its image has become shorthand for the American dream and the power of visual storytelling. It has served as both a romantic symbol of hope and a dramatic backdrop to Hollywood’s complex history.
Preservation Efforts
The Hollywood Sign Trust, established in 1992, is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and security of the landmark. The area is monitored by security cameras, motion sensors, and helicopter patrols to protect against vandalism and trespassing.
